One of the cool things about Dungeons and Dragons is that there are so many different ways to play. Some people just like rolling dice and killing monsters. Some like puzzles and exploration. Other players like to create a detailed character with in-depth backstories and motivations.
This one if for that last group.
How often do you spend all your time on a backstory for it not to matter? It gets completely eclipsed by the DMs grand vision of the story they want to tell. To be fair, it’s a hard balance to strike, especially with multiple players. Frankly, it’s one of my favorite challenges.
I view all that backstory as building blocks to base the campaign on. Game by game, the spotlight changes as to which character is highlighted. Eventually, all the backstories are woven together to such a point that it’s the parties back story. Everyone is fighting for the same goals and the story is all about you.
